Tesla is gearing up to introduce its autonomous Cybercab service in Austin, Texas, potentially by the end of this month, according to a report from The Information. However, there are growing indications that the company may not be fully prepared to meet this ambitious deadline.
The unique aspect of Tesla's Cybercab service is its design, which eliminates pedals and a steering wheel altogether. This means the vehicles rely solely on autonomous driving software, raising concerns about the lack of a failsafe mechanism should issues arise with either the software or the hardware.
According to Tesla's report, its fleet has accumulated 380,000 miles of driverless operation across all its Robotaxi hubs. In comparison, Waymo has reported over 220 million miles since 2020, raising questions about Tesla's progress and readiness in the autonomous vehicle space.
In Austin, there are currently only 186 registered Robotaxi vehicles, with the number of unsupervised cars decreasing from 25 to just 17 by July. This limited capacity does not seem sufficient for a comprehensive rollout of a driverless taxi service.
Nonetheless, Tesla is taking steps to ensure safety. The company has conducted emergency training sessions with first responders in Austin on how to handle its vehicles in various situations. Additionally, Tesla assures that its Robotaxis are monitored continuously, with human operators available to take remote control if necessary. The automaker has also been providing ride experiences to its employees on campus.
Rather than a full-scale launch, reports suggest Tesla might be exploring a more soft launch approach, where rides are initially offered primarily to employees on public roads. This may explain why the official Tesla Robotaxi account on X has invited individuals for a free test ride on August 23, ahead of the unofficial Cybercab launch event.
