In a move to distinguish between human musicians and AI-generated artists, Spotify has announced the rollout of a new labeling system called "AI Persona." This initiative aims to enhance transparency for listeners and promote authentic artists in the ever-evolving landscape of music created with artificial intelligence.
Starting mid-September, Spotify will label artist profiles that disclose their identity as AI-generated alongside those identified by the platform itself. The AI Persona label is designed to inform users that these artists "do not represent a real person." By default, music produced by AI Personas will not appear in any of Spotify's editorial or algorithmic recommendations, although listeners who follow these artists will still receive their updates.
Artists now have the opportunity to self-identify as AI Personas, while Spotify conducts reviews to identify profiles that exhibit traits of photorealistic AI-generated identities. The AI Persona badge will be visible on artist profiles, in search results, and across playlists to ensure users are aware of the nature of the artist.
By tapping the AI Persona badge, listeners can see whether the artist has self-disclosed their status or if Spotify made an informed decision based on their review. Artists identified in this manner will have an opportunity to appeal the designation if they believe it is inaccurate.
Additionally, Spotify plans to provide users with an option to report profiles they suspect to be AI Personas. The company clarifies that the badge pertains to the artist’s public identity rather than the process by which their music was created. For insights regarding how the music is made, Spotify also offers AI Credits and a feature called SongDNA.
As the music industry evolves, Spotify aims to adapt its approach to AI, striving to filter out low-quality content and spam from its recommendations.
