In a move that highlights the increasing budget constraints in the smartphone market, Lava has unveiled the Lava Smart 4, a new entry-level device that features specifications reminiscent of 2016. This phone aims to provide affordability, but it raises questions about its usability in today's tech landscape.
Lava Smart 4 Overview
The Lava Smart 4 is priced at INR 8,500 (approximately $90) and comes equipped with features that reflect the ongoing global memory shortage affecting low-tier smartphones. One of the first aspects to note is its display—a 6.56-inch LCD with a low resolution of 960 x 540 pixels.
This 540p resolution, providing just 168ppi, seems outdated in 2026. Nonetheless, the phone includes a 90Hz refresh rate and features a waterdrop notch for the 5MP front-facing camera.
Moving on to the processing power, the device is powered by the Unisoc 9863A chipset. Originally launched in 2018 and built on a 28nm process, this SoC has become a common choice for entry-level Lava smartphones. However, the most concerning aspect of the phone is its modest 3GB of RAM—an amount that barely meets modern smartphones' requirements.
Lava Smart 4 Key Features
Due to its limited RAM, the Lava Smart 4 operates on Android 16 Go Edition, which is designed for devices with restricted hardware capabilities; standard Android 16 requires at least 6GB of RAM to function effectively.
The rest of the specifications are equally unimpressive, featuring an 8MP rear camera and a substantial 5,000 mAh battery that supports 10W charging. Luckily, it utilizes a USB-C port for connectivity.
The Lava Smart 4 is available in two colors: Konark Gold and Ajanta Grey. It will be sold through authorized Lava retailers across India.
