The Ultimate Electric Vehicle Showdown: Discovering the Fastest EV

Source: Date:

Electric vehicles (EVs) are renowned for their efficiency, quiet operation, comfort, and advanced technology. However, the allure of instant torque and impressive power remains undeniable. A team in China set out to determine which of the current mass-market EVs is the fastest by pitting the top ten models against each other to see which can reach 100 km/h the quickest. They also conducted braking tests to ensure thorough evaluation.

Since the tests were conducted in China, some of the featured vehicles may not be well-known internationally. The ten contenders in the drag race were: Neo ET7, XPeng P7 (known as P7i in China), Arcfox Alpha S, Tesla Model 3 Performance, Porsche Taycan Turbo, Audi RS e-tron GT, Tesla Model S Plaid, Zeekr 001 FR, Lotus Eletre R+, and the new Zeekr 007. Before the competition, each vehicle was charged to 80%, and tire pressures adhered to manufacturer specifications.

The air temperature was around 0°C, a factor that was consistent across all vehicles involved. Each car was fitted with a measurement device to ensure accurate results.

Here's an overview of the participants, along with their power outputs and claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration times as stated by manufacturers.

VehiclePowerClaimed 0-100 km/h Time
Zeekr 001 FR930 kW2.02 s
Tesla Model S Plaid760 kW2.1 s
Zeekr 007468 kW2.84 s
Lotus Eletre R+675 kW2.95 s
Porsche Taycan Turbo500 kW3.2 s
Audi RS e-tron GT475 kW3.3 s
Tesla Model 3 Performance377 kW3.3 s
ArcFox Alpha S487 kW3.5 s
Nio ET7480 kW3.8 s
XPeng P7348 kW3.9 s

During the tests, the Zeekr 001 FR exhibited a significant lead over the Tesla Model S Plaid, despite both vehicles falling short of their advertised acceleration times.

The Zeekr 007 secured third place, trailing the Model S by two-tenths of a second, while the Lotus Eletre R+ finished just behind it.

Notably, the Audi RS e-tron GT was one of only two vehicles that achieved its claimed acceleration time, even under chilly conditions. This performance enabled it to surpass the Porsche Taycan Turbo, which claimed better specifications, and left a gap of four-tenths to the Model 3 Performance, which promised an identical acceleration time.

Nio ET7 also delivered its promised 0-100 km/h time, placing eighth, ahead of the ArcFox Alpha S. The Nio managed to convert a one-tenth-second advantage over the XPeng P7 into a six-tenths margin on the track.

The XPeng P7, Lotus Eletre R+, and Zeekr 007 followed closely behind the e-tron GT in what can be termed a competent group. However, their stopping distances, while impressive considering the vehicles' weight and temperature, do not seem suited for track conditions.

The Tesla Model S Plaid's brake test concluded with an alarming incident. Despite being equipped with a Track Package featuring ceramic brakes, the Tesla experienced a malfunction that locked all four brakes, forcing the driver off-course. Fortunately, there were no accidents, but the tires sustained significant damage.
