According to a recent report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, OpenAI is set to launch its first device: a screen-less smart speaker. Designed for indoor use, it will be portable and powered by a rechargeable battery.
This smart speaker will offer features typical of similar devices, including the ability to control smart home appliances, play media, answer questions, respond to messages, and, importantly, it will integrate ChatGPT. The chatbot will use an advanced version of the new ChatGPT voice mode, allowing for genuine back-and-forth conversations, including interruptions from both the device and the user.
This is not a leaked image, it's a speculative AI renderThe smart speaker will become increasingly personalized over time, gathering more context about its user. OpenAI aims for it to be proactive, anticipating users' needs and presenting information even before it is requested. The company envisions that the speaker's main appeal will be its engaging personality and ability to connect with users on a human-like level.
Notably, the speaker will feature mechanical elements that move autonomously, giving it an animated quality rather than portraying it as merely a command-response object. This design intent is to establish the device as a physical embodiment of ChatGPT. Additionally, the speaker will include a camera and various sensors to better comprehend its user's environment.
This release will mark the first product resulting from OpenAI's acquisition of Jony Ive's io Products. Ive's design studio, LoveFrom, is collaborating on this project, with many former Apple designers and engineers—responsible for the iPhone and Mac—contributing to the development. The speaker is expected to be unveiled later this year, with an anticipated release in 2027.
