Samsung and Anthropic: Exploring Custom AI Chip Manufacturing

Source: Date:

According to a report by The Information, Anthropic and Samsung are currently in the early stages of negotiating a partnership that would see the South Korean tech giant manufacturing custom AI chips for Anthropic.

Samsung may manufacture Anthropic's custom AI chips

The increasing demand for semiconductors, driven primarily by the surge in AI technologies, has led many companies to seek alternatives to TSMC for chip production. Prior to the AI boom, both Samsung and Intel faced challenges within their chip divisions. However, recent developments in the semiconductor industry have proven beneficial for these companies. Notably, Apple is once again considering Intel as a chip supplier, and Samsung is reportedly in discussions with Apple as well.

While Anthropic has assured its partners that its data centers will continue to utilize Amazon's Titanium chips, Google's tensor processing units (TPUs), and Nvidia's GPUs for the foreseeable future, the company recognizes the necessity of developing custom hardware to support its compute needs and future growth. In a similar vein, OpenAI is engaged in discussions with Broadcom regarding custom chip solutions.
