The global automotive landscape is continually evolving as international brands refine their strategies. Chinese automotive leader BYD is making significant strides with the introduction of the Dolphin G, a brand-new hatchback specifically designed for European drivers. Unlike previous models that underwent modifications for export, the Dolphin G is the first vehicle that BYD has developed from the ground up with European consumers in mind. This innovative approach aims to increase its foothold in the lucrative European market.
The Dolphin G will be manufactured closer to its target audience, with assembly taking place at BYD's new factory in Szeged, Hungary. This makes it one of the premier models to emerge from the facility. Prospective buyers will soon learn about pricing, as official details are expected to be released later this month, followed by customer deliveries slated for the fall of 2026.

Measuring 4,160 mm in length and 1,825 mm in width, the Dolphin G is 130 mm shorter and 55 mm wider than its battery-powered counterpart in Europe. Its exterior showcases sleek, thin headlights and an active air intake system, with the front bumper featuring dual airflow channels to enhance efficiency. The side profile presents semi-hidden door handles and darkened D-pillars, emphasizing its stylish design.
The compact design is tailored for urban environments, allowing the Dolphin G to easily fit into tight parking spaces. Although official images highlight the aerodynamic exterior, recent spy shots from China have provided a first detailed glimpse into the vehicle's interior. The cabin showcases a minimalist design, eliminating visual clutter. A prominent floating touchscreen dominates the dashboard, complemented by a smaller LCD display directly behind the steering wheel. The dashboard maintains a clean appearance as the gear shifter is conveniently positioned behind the three-spoke steering wheel.

Upon closer inspection of the center console, the tunnel between the front seats features a simplified control block, avoiding the overwhelming array of buttons seen in older vehicles. This compact cluster includes only essential controls, such as the hazard lights, manual driving mode selector, and volume adjustment. Adjacent to these controls is a cup holder and a discreet storage compartment.
While BYD is renowned for its electric vehicles, the Dolphin G incorporates a plug-in hybrid system, combining a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor. The gasoline engine generates 72 kW (97 horsepower), while the electric motor produces 145 kW (194 horsepower). Together, these power sources deliver a combined output of 156 kW, translating to a total of 209 horsepower for the hatchback.

Drivers can choose from two LFP battery options based on their commuting needs. The entry-level package offers a capacity of 7.8 kWh, while the larger option provides 18 kWh, enabling all-electric travel during city commutes. When the battery depletes, the gasoline engine activates to sustain the vehicle during longer journeys.
The launch of this hatchback coincides with significant international growth for BYD. Recent data from China DataTracker indicates that the company’s overseas sales surged to 135,098 units, marking an impressive 70.8% year-over-year increase. BYD aims to leverage the Dolphin G to continue this upward trajectory in Europe. If the manufacturer prices the vehicle competitively this June, it could pose a significant challenge to established European automakers.
