A recent report reveals that the forthcoming One UI 9—based on Android 17—will introduce a novel way to access Bixby. Despite decreasing usage statistics, Bixby is here to stay, as Samsung has no plans to discontinue the virtual assistant.
For dedicated Bixby users, One UI 9 will feature a gesture-based activation. Users can simply lift their phone to their face to trigger Bixby, allowing them to communicate with the assistant without needing to say “Bixby” or “Hey Bixby” beforehand.
With this new feature, you will have three methods to activate Samsung's assistant in One UI 9: the hotword, pressing the power button, or the innovative “Gesture Wake-up.” This gesture-based approach could prove to be the most convenient as long as it works reliably without unintended activations.
One UI 9 is set to launch in July on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8. Following the launch, it will be rolled out as a software update for other Samsung devices still under support in the upcoming months.
