Volkswagen Launches ID. Polo and Cupra Raval Production in Spain

At the Martorell factory in Spain, Volkswagen has officially commenced production of the ID. Polo and Cupra Raval. This marks a significant milestone for the company as part of its Electric Urban Car Family initiative aimed at making smaller electric vehicles accessible to a wider global audience. By utilizing shared manufacturing infrastructure and engineering resources, Volkswagen is positioned to compete directly with lower-cost international rivals entering the European market.

Affordable hatchbacks have traditionally been a cornerstone of the European auto industry. The new VW ID. Polo represents the evolution of a historically successful gasoline-powered nameplate into the electric age. In contrast, the Cupra Raval features a sportier, more stylish design, targeting younger drivers interested in subcompact cars with distinctive aesthetics.

Both models aim for a competitive pricing strategy. The entry-level Volkswagen ID. Polo starts at €24,995, while the sportier Cupra Raval is priced from €26,000. These price points are strategically lower compared to previous generations from the VW Group, reflecting significant efforts to reduce battery and development costs.

The new electric hatchbacks are built on the MEB+ platform, a modular architecture optimized for front-wheel-drive urban vehicles. By adopting a single corporate platform across various brands, Volkswagen has reduced industrial complexity and achieved approximately €600 million in development savings. This shared technology allows for distinct exterior styling and brand individuality while maintaining standardized mechanical components.

The focus of these new models is on maximizing cabin space within a compact design. Both vehicles are about four meters long, making them ideal for navigating crowded city streets while providing seating comfort typically found in larger segments. The engineering teams prioritized the placement of electric drivetrain components to keep the cabin floor flat, enhancing legroom and cargo space.

Battery options vary by trim. The Volkswagen ID. Polo offers two battery choices: a basic 37 kWh LFP pack and a larger 52 kWh NMC pack. With the larger battery, the Polo can achieve a driving range of up to 454 km under the WLTP testing cycle. The Cupra Raval will launch with three trim levels and a comparable range.

Interiors of the two models cater to different consumer preferences. The ID. Polo features a functional, spacious layout equipped with modern connectivity software, traffic light recognition, and driver assistance systems derived from Volkswagen’s premium range. Conversely, the Cupra Raval showcases a progressive design with three-dimensional knitted bucket seats and dynamic light projections integrated into the door trim panels.

As production continues, the Spanish hub is set to increase output with upcoming models built on the same vehicle architecture. Volkswagen will soon introduce a new electric compact crossover named ID. Cross, which will serve as the electric counterpart to the T-Cross model. This expansion aligns with Volkswagen’s strategy to cultivate a robust domestic supply chain, sourcing a significant portion of vehicle components locally in Europe for long-term manufacturing stability.
