Sadly, recent leaks regarding the iPhone 18 Pro's battery capacity suggest that Apple hasn't made the strides many were hoping for. It's notable that the lack of a SIM tray in the US version allows for marginally more space for the battery.

New Chip but No Major Battery Enhancement

The iPhone 18 Pro is set to be powered by Apple's latest A20 Pro chip, manufactured using TSMC's 2 nm process alongside the new C2 modem. While these advancements may lead to better optimization and slight improvements in battery life, they do little to address the underlying issue of battery capacity.

Why Aren't Battery Capacities Growing?

Despite the advancements in battery technology, Apple's offerings remain stagnant since they crossed the 4000 mAh threshold in 2021 with the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Fast forward five years, and we still see batteries falling within the 4000 mAh to 4500 mAh range, with only the iPhone 17 Pro Max breaking the 5000 mAh barrier.

While software optimization is crucial, the demand for larger battery capacities is at an all-time high, especially when compared to competitors like OnePlus who routinely feature over 7000 mAh batteries. Apple has yet to fully embrace silicon carbon battery technology, which promises higher capacities without bulky designs, something that has been utilized by many of its rivals for years.

The Future of Battery Technology in iPhones

It’s disheartening for consumers to see Apple maintain its conservative approach towards battery size, holding steadfast at around the 4000 mAh mark while competitors explore possibilities achieving 6000-7000 mAh capacities. There is growing speculation that Apple may finally be working on silicon carbon batteries, which could signal a breakthrough in battery technology. Should this materialize, we might see iPhones with larger battery capacities in the coming years.
