If you're passionate about headphones, you're likely acquainted with Sony's WH-1000X series, renowned as one of the leading wireless over-ear noise-cancelling headphones. Together with the Bose QuietComfort 35, which pioneered this category, Sony's 1000X series has dominated the market for years, maintaining its popularity even as competitors like Apple have entered the field.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of its wireless over-ear ANC headphone line, Sony has introduced something special: the Sony 1000X The ColleXion. This model is positioned as a premium addition to the lineup and does not replace the WH-1000XM6, instead slotting above it.
What’s new? Starting with the design, the new headphones boast a more luxurious feel and improved comfort. The headband is wider, and the ear cups are clad in high-quality synthetic leather, with stainless steel accents on the stems.
Unlike the XM6 model, the new headphones do not fold but only swivel, similar to the XM5. The 1000X The ColleXion is available in Black or a striking Platinum White.
Similar to the WH-1000XM6, these headphones feature 12 microphones for calls and active noise cancellation. They also utilize the QN3 processor responsible for noise cancellation, but with an upgraded V3 version that enhances sound processing and introduces advanced spatial modes.
The headphones include a 360 Upmix setting optimized for music, movies, and gaming, along with a dedicated hardware button to toggle between modes.
Tuning has improved to appeal to audiophiles, emphasizing clear highs and an expansive soundstage. Sony has engaged prominent acoustic engineers to help tune these new headphones.
This indicates that Sony aims to differentiate the 1000X The ColleXion from the signature warm and bass-heavy sound associated with the WH-1000X series, often referred to as 'muddy' by some critics.
Beyond internal enhancements, the headphones also feature new drivers made from a "unidirectional carbon layered core composite," designed to improve treble detail, separation, and soundstage.
The 1000X The ColleXion comes with a premium carrying case featuring a magnetic clasp and an integrated handle. As with previous models, a 3.5mm cable is included in the case. We will update this article with pricing information once Sony officially announces it.
