Wear OS 7 Launches: Widgets, Live Updates, and Enhanced Battery Life

At the Google I/O 2026 conference, Google introduced Wear OS 7, the latest iteration of its smartwatch operating system based on Android 17. This update features several enhancements, including Widgets, Live Updates, and Gemini Intelligence on select devices.

Google claims that Wear OS 7 offers up to a 10 percent improvement in battery life for smartwatches upgrading from Wear OS 6.

The introduction of Widgets in Wear OS 7 is designed to enhance flexibility and dynamics. These widgets will be available in 2x1 and 2x2 layouts, mirroring the widget formats used on Android smartphones.

The update also brings Live Updates, enabling apps to display real-time information effectively on smartwatches.

Furthermore, Google is enhancing system media controls in Wear OS 7, introducing per-app media auto-launch controls and seamless audio routing via the Remote Output Switcher.

Wear OS 7 also features a new Wear Workout Tracker that standardizes workout tracking experiences and supports Watch Face Format v5.

Additionally, Google will integrate Gemini Intelligence into select smartwatches launching later this year, which aims to provide advanced, agentic experiences. The new App Functions API in Wear OS 7 allows developers to connect applications with AI assistants such as Gemini.

The company has confirmed that task automation will be available in smartwatches with Wear OS 7. Users will be able to execute actions such as placing orders on DoorDash using voice commands.

Developers can test Google's new smartwatch software through the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator, with a full release expected later this year.
