The performance division of Mercedes-Benz has entered a new era with the unveiling of its flagship sedan, the all-electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. This vehicle seeks to redefine perceptions of high-performance electric cars. While some global automakers are scaling back their electrification efforts, AMG is confidently progressing with a direct electric successor to its internal combustion engine (ICE) models. This new model starkly contrasts with its predecessor, which was equipped with loud twin-turbo V8 engines.

At the heart of this striking vehicle is the innovative AMG.EA architecture, specifically designed for high-performance electric vehicles, without sharing components with standard Mercedes-Benz models. The exterior design takes significant cues from the Concept AMG GT XX revealed last year, but the production version has received substantial stylistic updates. Its low-slung, sweeping form has sparked intense discussions among car enthusiasts regarding its distinctive rear proportions.

To compete with established rivals like the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron GT, engineers in Affalterbach have focused on delivering outstanding raw mechanical power. The flagship GT 63 4Matic+ variant is outfitted with three advanced axial flux electric motors, producing a staggering 1,153 horsepower. Activating launch control unleashes up to 2,000 Nm of torque. For customers seeking a more accessible option, the lower-tier GT 55 variant still offers an impressive 805 horsepower.

The acceleration figures for this sizable sedan rival those of modern hypercars. The top-spec GT 63 can achieve 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.1 seconds with a one-foot rollout; without this assistance, it takes 2.4 seconds. If the driver maintains acceleration, the vehicle surpasses 200 km/h in just 6.8 seconds. With the optional AMG Driver’s Package, the top speed is electronically capped at 300 km/h. Remarkably, this extreme performance is achieved despite the car's substantial weight of 2,460 kg.

The 106 kWh battery pack powers the tri-motor setup. Thanks to its 800-volt electrical architecture, the battery supports DC fast charging at rates up to 600 kW, allowing it to charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 11 minutes. For long journeys, it gains 460 km of range in about 10 minutes. On a full charge, the GT 63 provides a maximum driving range of 696 km according to the combined WLTP cycle, while the lighter-tuned GT 55 achieves up to 700 km.

Mercedes-AMG has equipped the vehicle with advanced chassis technologies to ensure it handles curves like a true sports car. The cabin showcases the AMGFORCE Sport+ system with physical Response Control and Agility Control dials, allowing the driver to easily adjust power delivery and cornering behavior through variable torque distribution. The system includes nine different levels of traction control and a variety of driving modes, such as Comfort, Sport, Race, Slippery, Eco, and Individual.

To compensate for its 2,460 kg curb weight, the vehicle features an advanced AMG Active Ride Control air suspension system. It utilizes semi-active roll stabilization with fully adjustable rebound and compression shocks. The standard active rear-axle steering turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the front wheels at speeds below 80 km/h to enhance agility, while at higher speeds, all four wheels steer in the same direction for improved highway stability. Braking is managed by a combination of massive carbon-ceramic discs in the front and traditional steel brakes in the rear.

Given the inherently quiet nature of electric cars, AMG has taken extensive measures to add auditory excitement to the driving experience. The proprietary AMGFORCE S+ system employs synthetic soundtracks and artificial powertrain vibrations that replicate the deep V8 growl of the track-oriented AMG GT R coupe. The software even simulates gear shifts during hard acceleration, creating an experience reminiscent of traditional multi-speed gearboxes.

The interior represents a significant departure from previous Mercedes-AMG designs. The dashboard features a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster positioned directly in front of the driver, flanked by a 14-inch central infotainment display. An additional 14-inch touchscreen for front passengers is available as an option. The center console and doors are adorned with premium carbon fiber trim, while a customizable Sky Control panoramic glass roof allows changes in color and opacity to enhance the cabin ambiance.

While official pricing has not yet been released, Mercedes-AMG representatives indicate that the pricing for the new electric models will closely align with the previous gasoline-powered generation. Consequently, the starting price is anticipated to be around €170,000, with final costs, including optional extras, potentially climbing to near €260,000.
