Apple Achieves Major Sustainability Goals with 30% Recycled Materials in 2025, Certain Components Now 100% Recycled

Source: Date:

In a significant stride towards sustainability, Apple has announced that a remarkable 30% of the materials used in its products shipped last year came from recycled sources. With environmental responsibility at the forefront, Apple has set a benchmark in the tech industry and strives for more ambitious goals in the coming years.

Last year, Apple successfully eliminated all plastic from its product packaging; every Apple device now arrives in 100% fiber-based packaging that is easy to recycle at home.

The innovation doesn't stop with packaging. Across its entire product lineup, Apple has increasingly integrated recycled materials, achieving a milestone where certain components are now made entirely from recycled sources. Specifically:

  • All Apple-designed batteries now utilize 100% recycled cobalt.
  • All magnets are made from 100% recycled rare earth elements.
  • All Apple-designed printed circuit boards feature 100% recycled gold plating and tin solder.

Apple ensures that all materials, whether recycled or not, are sourced responsibly, prioritizing strong human rights and environmental standards throughout its supply chain.

The MacBook Neo: Leading in Recyclability

The latest MacBook Neo stands out as Apple's most environmentally friendly product, boasting an impressive 60% of its materials derived from recycled content. This innovation not only enhances the device's sustainability but also exemplifies Apple's commitment to eco-design through efficient material usage and reduced water consumption during the anodizing process.

Over the last five years, Apple reports having cut plastic use by over 15,000 metric tons, mainly due to its transition to all-fiber packaging. Additionally, the tech giant's operations run on 100% renewable energy globally, with their supply chain operating at over 20 gigawatts of renewable energy. Apple has also made strides in reducing water usage, ensuring that 55% of water used in its facilities is replenished, while suppliers have collectively saved 17 billion gallons of water.

Apple's Environmental Achievements

With grand ambitions set for 2030, Apple aims to achieve full carbon neutrality across its operations and strives to replenish all the water used in its facilities.

In a bid to promote sustainability, Apple Stores are offering a 10% discount on AirPods and accessories to customers who recycle select Apple products in celebration of Earth Day, available until May 16.
