OpenAI's Upcoming Smart Speaker: A High-End Device with Innovative Features

Source: Date:

Since OpenAI acquired the design startup founded by former Apple chief designer Jony Ive, speculation has escalated regarding the products that may emerge from this collaboration. The expectation is that they will unveil their first hardware device. Initially, insiders suggested an AI pen, but more recent rumors have shifted toward simpler options like AI earbuds. Now, sources indicate that OpenAI is developing three hardware products: a wearable pin-like device, smart glasses, and a smart speaker, with the latter possibly leading the way.

OpenAI is allegedly making a pricey smart speaker with a built-in camera

A team of over 200 people is reportedly dedicated to these hardware projects. The smart speaker is rumored to be priced between $200 and $300 and will feature a built-in camera. This raises significant privacy concerns, especially considering that the device is expected to operate without a traditional “wake word.” Instead, it will continuously monitor its environment to understand context. Additional features may include a security system similar to Apple’s FaceID for user authentication and possibly for making purchases.

The speaker is not expected to hit the market until 2027, with plans for the smart glasses to follow in 2028. There has yet to be a release timeline for the wearable AI pin.
