Verizon's first promising quarter in 2025 regarding postpaid subscriber additions could be overshadowed by its performance compared to T-Mobile's forthcoming Q4 results, set to be released on February 11. Not one to delay action, Schulman is actively planning his next strategic steps. He is reportedly looking for a replacement for Sampath, who many thought would succeed Hans Vestberg, Verizon's former CEO. Rather than passing the baton, Schulman is seemingly restructuring his leadership team in pursuit of someone who might better align with his vision for the company. Although Sampath's position is precarious, his departure is not yet assured, as he has started receiving job offers but lacks a definite exit strategy.
The report implies that despite Schulman's efforts, which included laying off 13,000 people and cutting costs, Verizon continues to be overshadowed by AT&T and T-Mobile. This competitive environment partially clarifies Schulman's desire to replace Sampath. It's important to note that Verizon's issues date back to well before Sampath's appointment to lead the consumer group in 2023. He took on this challenge during a difficult phase and has played a critical role in steering the company back on course.
