Screen Skinz: Revolutionizing Smartphone Screen Protectors with Custom Designs

In a world where smartphone accessories often seem mundane, Screen Skinz is making waves by transforming the way we think about screen protectors. Recently featured on the popular show Shark Tank, the company is not just offering protection; it’s allowing users to showcase their personality and interests with custom-designed or licensed screen protectors. From logos of beloved sports teams to quirky character designs, Screen Skinz is paving the way for a new era of mobile protection that is anything but boring.

Making a Splash on Shark Tank

Screen Skinz made its debut on ABC-TV's Shark Tank, presenting a unique tempered glass screen protector that integrates vivid customization options. These screen protectors can display a custom logo or licensed logos from prominent sports franchises such as the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and NCAA. Notably, these logos appear when the phone's display is off, only to disappear when the screen lights up.

Securing Investment and Future Growth

The co-founders, CEO RaShaun Brown and Clay Canning, along with company advisor Wayne Pfeffer, requested $300,000 for 7.5% equity, valuing the company at $4 million. In April 2024, Screen Skinz successfully raised $1.5 million in a Seed round led by Starboard Star Venture Capital and South Loop Ventures.

Elevating a Simple Accessory

In a recent conversation, CEO Brown highlighted the often-overlooked nature of screen protection in the smartphone accessory market: "You buy it, slap it on, and forget about it until it breaks." Screen Skinz aims to change that narrative by making screen protectors an accessory that owners take pride in showcasing. Customers can design their own Screen Skinz or choose from an array of pre-printed options.

Designs for Everyone

Among the popular choices, sports team logos are available, as well as designs featuring beloved characters like "Hello Kitty." While these customized options typically cost more than standard screen protectors ($10-$15), die-hard fans may find the additional investment worthwhile. For example, a Screen Skinz featuring the Florida Panthers logo retails for $34.99, and a custom design approaches $50, while the production cost is only $3 per unit.

The Shark Deal

In a surprising turn of events, Kevin O’Leary, also known as “Mr. Wonderful,” teamed up with Alexis Ohanian, the founder of Reddit, to make a deal with Screen Skinz. They offered $300,000 for 15% equity in the company, with a unique royalty structure where they would earn $1 for each unit sold until they recouped $900,000, tripling their initial investment.

The Future of Screen Protectors

Screen Skinz screen protectors are built from .33mm tempered glass and boast a hardness ranking of 9H, offering decent resistance against scratches.
