Google's Update to Phone App Prevents Accidental Hang-Ups by Keeping Calls in Portrait Mode

In a significant improvement to the Phone by Google app, users can now avoid the frustrations associated with automatic screen rotation during calls. This change addresses a common issue where tilting the phone slightly in portrait mode would unintentionally rotate the screen to landscape, leading to confusion and accidental button presses when trying to end a call. With this update, users can enjoy a more straightforward calling experience without the worry of the screen switching orientations mid-conversation.

New Feature: "Keep Portrait Mode on Calls" Toggle

Following user feedback, Google has released a revised "Keep portrait mode on calls" toggle in version 202 Beta of the Phone by Google app. Earlier confusion arose when this feature was momentarily removed in subsequent versions. However, Google has now confirmed that users can effectively keep their screens from rotating to landscape during calls, a change that many have been seeking.

How to Disable the "Keep Portrait Mode on Calls" Setting

The new setting comes enabled by default, ensuring that the majority of Android users remain in portrait mode while on calls without any additional adjustments. For those who prefer to have their Phone by Google app rotate to landscape, you can turn off this feature easily. Simply open the Phone app, tap the hamburger menu on the left of the search bar, go to Settings > Display options, and disable "Keep portrait mode."
